De-Mystified Logos-Word in John
The De-Mystified Logos by Phil Maxwell July 2000; Revised August 2003
A reasonably straightforward, well documented investigation into John's intended meaning
of the word 'logos' ('word') in the Prologue of his gospel. The central point is
that the 'logos' of John 1 was clearly intended to be taken as a personification,
not a literal person, a view that has conveniently eluded almost
the entirety of orthodox Christianity for centuries.
The De-Mystified Logos
Table of Contents
- Introduction
- History, spirit, and consequences of the 'big lie' (deity of
Christ, trinitarianism, etc.) largely founded on misrepresentation
of the 'word of God' (logos) of John's Prologue.
- Definitions
& Usage - Usage and meaning of the word 'logos' in
Scripture and literature.
- Poetical
Structure - Lost in translation, most scholars agree that
part or all of the Prologue was intended as a song or poetry.
- Unoriginal
Thoughts - The concept of the 'logos' presented in the
Prologue of John's Gospel pre-dated it, as a metaphor, not the
literal person of God and/or Christ.
- Grammar -
Translator bias skews the meaning by inserting capitalizations and
personal pronouns.
- Is the Logos
REALLY God? - Not to Yahshua, John, the other apostles, or
anyone else of their day.
- The Logos
as Creator? - Combine a few translation anomalies, a lot of
theological rhetoric, and a dubious emperor's blessing, then mix
with a lot of assumptions and circular reasoning...
- The Logos
became Flesh? Really?? - This truly amazing claim
denies the very essence of both Yahweh and Yahshua.
- Conclusion
- Where's the beef? Neither the text nor any other literature
of or before John's time supports taking the 'word of God' as a
literal person. In contrast, both Hebrew and Secular
literature and the Scriptures show many cases where it (not he) was
personified.
- Debate
- The only serious taker-to-date, Steve Born of Seattle, WA, was
unable to find any references for interpreting the logos of John's
Prologue as a literal person. That didn't keep him from
arguing anyway, however feebly.
