Red, White and Blue BabylonDid God Forget to Mention the United States of America in Prophecy?by Phil MaxwellThere are two questions to be asked on the subject of the United States of America in end time prophecy: Is the United States even mentioned in Bible prophecy, and, if so, what is said about it? On the first, most either consider America to be symbolized by the "great harlot" called "Babylon" shown riding on the back of a great red "beast" in Revelation 17-18, etc., or that the United States does not figure into the mostly horrific events predicted in Bible prophecy to mark the closing chapter of this age. The latter view is generally an extension of an interpretation of the aforementioned "great harlot" and "beast" images as representing the Vatican or Roman Catholic Church and a new revived Roman Empire of the future. This theory necessitates a major shift in the current world order, particularly that this new "Holy Roman Empire" supersede the United States as the unrivaled "superpower" in terms of political and cultural influence and wealth in the world. Proponents of this theory postulate that since the United States of America has no significance in end time prophecy (according to their theory), it must, therefore, decline into a second or third rate nation before these prophecies can be fulfilled. (This 'that can't be true because this is' line of reasoning is entirely circular and inherently self-deluding, by the way.) The main difference between these two camps is that the former asserts that the pre-tribulation image of the harlot on the beast is presently fulfilled by the predominately Christian, self-governing people of America, whereas the latter claims that fulfillment of this prophecy is yet some time in the future. One thing that both camps seem to agree on is that the harlot and beast of Revelation 17-18, etc. are plainly cast as the dominate political, economic, and cultural force in the world in the days preceding the great tribulation. It is also true that these mysterious passages of scripture were intended to be understood by observation of the signs described therein, and none stand as large as this great red beast and its harlot queen rider insofar as pre-tribulation indicators go. Theories focusing on hypothetical future events and circumstances are all well and good in the course of studying, but don't negate the wisdom of objectively considering any globally dominant force in the world at any time in the light of Bible prophecy regarding the great harlot and her beast. Since the United States presently stands as the only "superpower" nation in the world, it is the focus of the articles in this section. The goal is to present the evidence related to and assess the probabilities of the U.S. fulfilling these prophecies. The higher those probabilities, the more likely that the storms of the great tribulation will soon begin in the same way it will end some time later -- with great destruction wrought against the people and land represented by the great harlot of Revelation.
