Anointing of Saul, America's Last Standby Phil Maxwell, 2002“We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness…” (Declaration of Independence, 1776) It has long been held that the United States of America is first and foremost a republic, a form of government based on the concept that sovereignty resides in the people. In effect, this is very much like ancient Israel in the days of the judges, of which it is written, “In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” (Jdg 17:6, 21:25) Both cases were founded upon the premise of the sovereignty of God and the relative obligations this inferred upon each person. History shows that Israel’s liberty came by the mighty hand of Yahweh who delivered them from slavery and made them a great nation, and the story of America’s rise is not so different, as its foundation also clearly recognizes that the basic rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness emanate from God alone. There came a day in Israel, however, where the people utterly rejected Yahweh’s sovereignty over them, and sought a king to rule over them and lead them in battle against their enemies. This was a long time coming, as Yahweh told Samuel that they had forsaken Him and served other gods from the day He delivered them from slavery in Egypt. They exercised their right to do what was right in their own eyes as though from themselves, not God, just like America has done. Thus, when faced with the threat of enemies, instead of looking to God, they were willing to pay a high price, even their own liberty, for the sake of feeling safe from their enemies, just like America is presently doing. (1 Sam 8) Yahweh told them through the aging Samuel that if they insisted on having a king, he would take the best of all they had and make them all into his servants. He even told them that they would come to cry out to Yahweh over the oppression of the king they chose for themselves, but that He wouldn’t hear them. They didn’t care, though, so Yahweh gave them their king, Saul, who not only did all the evil that had been foretold, but even made war against David, the one anointed to be king after Saul, and his handful of followers. America, having long taken its liberty as being endowed by man rather than God, is heading down the same path. The few faithful who will stand with Christ, the anointed King, will be hunted down, persecuted, and killed, but will not be forsaken. |
