Foolish Virgins
by Phil Maxwell June 4, 2002
…But at midnight there was a shout, 'Behold, the bridegroom! Come out
to meet him.' "Then all those virgins rose, and trimmed their lamps. And
the foolish said to the prudent, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are
going out.'
But the prudent answered, saying, 'No, there will not be enough for us and you
too; go instead to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.'
And while they were going away to make the purchase, the bridegroom came, and
those who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast; and the door was
shut." [Mt 25:6-10]
What an interesting view this gives us of the delusion that will ultimately
separate the wicked and slothful from the faithful in preparation for the
Lord’s return. Just as illustrated in the parable of the wheat and tares, the
wicked are separated out first, allowing the light of the faithful to shine
bright not only for them, but them alone.
As to the unfaithful, their character is shown first by their failure to bring
their own oil, then by their desire to partake of other’s oil. Wicked and
slothful servants that they are, they look to others to give them the light they
need rather than cultivating it themselves, and this will ultimately be the
snare they fall prey to. Desperate due to no fault but their own, the only thing
left for them to do is leave the faithful to buy oil from those who sell it. And
where might someone buy lamp oil while the true children of God await their
Lord’s return with their own lamps burning bright? We can be sure that plenty
will claim to sell Yahshua’s light, but the light they have in them won’t
really be the light of God.
And for this reason God will send upon them a deluding influence so that they
might believe what is false, in order that they all may be judged who did not
believe the truth, but took pleasure in wickedness. [2 Th 2:11-12]
In the end, each man’s faith and works must stand on their own in judgment.
Those who don’t prepare for the accounting Yahshua most certainly will do of
all His servants will be left out as much as those who didn’t join with Noah
in building the ark were shut out.
